Seven sevens meme

The Magnificent SevenBonnie, a very sharp GodBlogCon 2005 blogger who writes at Off the top and Intellectuelle, has “tagged” me to participate in a new meme. See her own post about it here.

A meme is something like a chain letter that spreads from blogger to blogger until someone starts a new one. Most memes seem to involve lists. This one requires seven answers to seven questions:

  1. Seven things I’d like to do before I die.
  2. Seven things I cannot do.
  3. Seven things that attract me to my wife.
  4. Seven things I say most often.
  5. Seven books I love.
  6. Seven movies I watch over and over again.
  7. Seven people I want to invite to join this meme.

Seven things I’d like to do before I die:

  • visit Scotland
  • publish a novel (that’s read beyond my immediate family)
  • learn to play the guitar
  • sail single-handed to the Caribbean
  • discover an underground cavern
  • drive a Ferrari at high speeds on a race track
  • scatter billions and billions of tumbleweed seeds on the grave of Carl Sagan

Seven things I cannot do:

  • whistle
  • play the piano
  • yodel (not that I really want to…)
  • touch spiders
  • fold shirts like my wife does
  • memorize anything
  • eat Hot and Sour soup without slurping

Seven things that attract me to my wife:

  • her indefatigable sense of humor
  • her smile
  • a mind that is never still
  • her unwavering faith in God
  • her wisdom
  • she gets lost in parking lots (it brings out the Boy Scout in me)
  • strangely, she loves me

Seven things I say most often:

  • You’re kidding!
  • Whoa, baby!
  • Shoot, I reckon.
  • I do not think that word means what you think it means.
  • Life is hard, and then you die.
  • Vamos a ver.
  • My computer hates me.

Seven Eight books I love:

  • The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien
  • The New Testament, JB Phillips translation
  • Parting the Waters: America in the King Years 1954-63, Taylor Branch
  • The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky
  • The Civil War: A Narrative (Vols. 1-3), Shelby Foote
  • anything by Tony Hillerman
  • Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier
  • An Anthropologist on Mars, Dr. Oliver Sacks

Seven movies I watch over and over again:

  • The Right Stuff
  • The Natural
  • Groundhog Day (every time I watch it, it seems like the very first time!)
  • Amadeus
  • Get Shorty
  • Grand Canyon
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

  2. Thanks for “playing,” Charlie! Your lists are great. Love the tumbleweed thing.

I forgot about “Amadeus;” that should probably be on my list too. (although the movie’s historical accuracy is disputed, I love the way Mozart’s genius & musicality is portrayed.)

  3. Thanks, Charlie! Actually, this was kind of fun…it was my first “tag.” I’m posting my sevens tomorrow.

  4. We’re Hillerman fans, too. 🙂

  5. Charlie,

Is Grand Canyon the one where different peoples lives intersect – there’s a black guy who helps a white guy whose car breaks down in Ingelwood – and they end up standing looking at the Grand Cnayon at the end? because if it is – I LOVED that movie. I raved about it – it really made me think about how we can follow on from connections or not. Truth be told – it came to mind as I made my own list (as did about 5 other movies).

I can touch weeny little spiders but the big jumping ones get half a can of spray dumped on them pronto.

I love the graphic you have for this post!

  6. Thanks for the tag, Charlie–I’m working on it and will soon post!

“busies” that I forget what’s really

bring shame and reproach on the name of

    Jesus (again, numero uno!).

    5.

    Climb any literal mountains.

    6.

Be on a reality TV show.
