I don't think sinead's tirades were "anti-religious" - they were anti-hypocritical hierarchy. An opinion she seems to still hold quite strongly based on your excerpts above.

For example, everyone knows she ripped up the picture of the pope on SNL. But the reason she ripped it up was that she was protesting the church's cover-up of priests abusing children - she had just finished singing a version of Bob Marley's "War" with the lyrics changed to talk about child abuse. She was about 10 years ahead of the curve on that issue so no one listened to her, they just let the abuse continue and called her crazy.

I'm sure the reason she might regret ripping up that picture is because it did not achieve the intended result of spotlighting the church's cover-up, not that she is sorry for offending anyone.

As for her embracement of the rastafarian Jah - it might be useful to give the rasta movement a little closer inspection, its a religion that encourages everyone to find God through their own spiritual examination, a very anti-hierarchy approach, much like those other protestant sects with european roots.

Jill, honey.

Armen was simply pointing out that the God of the Bible is incredibly judgemental. Which He most certainly is, no?

Or does condemning entire nations to destruction for not following stated dietary customs not count as being judgmental? Please don't make me go get some quotes from your tired old book.

This latest 'theology' of Sinead O'Connors is just the latest in a lifelong string of identity crises. She's gone from Catholic to unwed teenage mother to popstar to Lesbian to straight to lesbian to straight. She's publically "retired" 3 times. She attempted suicide 7 years ago. Sometimes she apologizes emphatically about tearing up the pope's picture, sometimes she plays the rebel. Now shes singing to 'Jah', with I guess is a more palatable flavor of Christian god for her.

Like most lost people who turn to religion (in this case one after another) her identity crisis is at the heart of her faith. The painful difference here is that its on display for all to see.

I'd like to know what version of the scriptures she reads, when she's able to read the prophets, and then say that, "I don't think God judges anybody".

That's one of the craziest statements I've read in a long time.
