Dear Charlie,

Once again, you do not disappoint your readers! You have penned another one of your fascinating, educational and spirit-lifting essays!

Glad to know that you are O.K. and that the headaches are going away.

I have been reading a book called, "Revealing The Mysteries of Heaven," by Dr. David Jeremiah. It is a book that informs Christians about what heaven will be like. I learned so much! It is thoroughly Bible-based and I recommend it to everyone who wants to get a glimpse of where our souls and spirits will reside in eternity. Of course, it's not just about where we will be - it's more about with Whom we will be! Namely, Jesus Christ!

God bless,

Wow. That is so right. And not only are we very limited in explaining these soul things but we would also be hard-pressed to demonstrate that they increase our overall survivability on this planet or that they have any functional advantage at all. If they have a purely bio-mechanical origin, they must be a sort of random and relatively useless side-effect of some more "practical" function. What is the beauty of a butterfly to my dog? The butterfly is nothing more to her than a moving object inviting pursuit. To a bird, the butterfly might be lunch, but probably nothing more. What part would a hope, a dream, an anticipation play in the life of your bobcat, unless it is merely the hope of grabbing a quick meal? Verily, when we humans lose or forget our hopes and dreams, we seem to become less human. Maybe even less human than the bobcat. Because apart from the limiting effects of what we call our soul (at least when it is in good health), we are not only capable of more horrific acts than would ever have occurred to the bobcat, but we also become more likely to perpetrate them. It's in the news every day.
